Detritus of the Caliphate
The once-sprawling "Caliphate" of the self-styled Islamic State finally met its demise in the Syrian town of Baghuz during the first months of 2019. As the final battle ground on, thousands of civilians, including the wives and children of ISIS fighters, fled the cataclysmic downfall of the proto-state and surrendered to the international coalition. Most of these women and children, as well as the ISIS fighters themselves, were entrusted into the custody of the Syrian Kurds. Tens of thousands continue to reside in prisons and refugee camps such as the infamous Al-Hol camp to this day, under the Kurds’ increasingly strained wardenship.
